Anatomy of a Pin-Striping Job

A co-worker approached me to do a small pinstripe job for his girlfriend.
She has a Harley dresser with pinstriping and wanted to get her helmet to have something similar.

Step 1:  Here is the sample that was brought to me.  It is a saddlebag lid from the Harley dresser with a very nice native pattern.

Step 2:  Here is the helmet.  It is a nice, but plain lid. Before anything I give it a thorough cleaning to get all of the waxes and oils off the surface.

Step 3:  I like to start off with a sketch, this time on paper. I am going for a design that gets the feel of the pattern on the bike, not an exact duplicate.  The native pattern actually varies a bit on different parts of the bike. After the design is drawn, I go over the lines with a pounce wheel to punch the holes in the paper.

Step 4:  The paper is positioned on one side of the helmet and held in place with tape.

Step 5:  Let the pouncing begin.  A chalk bag in tapped over the paper design, leaving a dotted line pattern on the helmet to follow.

Step 6: Here is a closer view of the chalk pattern.  The beauty of the paper pattern with the perforations is the pattern can be flipped over and the mirror image placed on the other side of the helmet.

Step 7:  Now the fun begins, laying down the paint.

Step 8:  Here is the finished design.  After drying for a day, the excess chalk just wipes off with a wet towel. Wax can be applied after 4 weeks or so to give the enamel time to dry.   Now time to do it again on the other side.
